How It Works

How our classes work

Initial Assessment

  • We will arrange an assessment for your child to determine exactly the strengths and weaknesses of their knowledge and skills and to identify any gaps in their understanding. This will pinpoint any area or topic that may need attention. This will allow us to determine the “start point” in the program for that particular student – at a level that they will still find easy but which will gradually progress to more challenging material. This will take about an hour.
  • We will agree a suitable time slot for your student’s online class which remains the same from week to week. Please refer to possible time slots available.
  • Our students attend an online class once a week – 30 minutes for primary students and 45 minutes for secondary students.

Before the Class

For primary students we will send you a schedule of work and the relevant materials for the upcoming class.

For secondary students we work from a text book and/or prepared work sheets with examples.

At the Class

A new topic is explored and explained. Various examples are worked through and the student is encouraged to highlight any difficulties and discuss their understanding of the topic. In the event that the student is struggling to understand the topic we will tweak the homework to something that the student can manage. Each student will receive individual homework that will have to be completed before the next class.

This material that the student works on for the week at home will give them a chance to practise and consolidate the new concept that they have just met. Neurological science has shown that with constant practice new neural pathways are laid down. The best way to practice is “little and often”

At Home

  • The student will be expected to complete the given homework before the next class.
  • The homework must be timed each day and answers are provided to help the parent correct and monitor the given work.
  • This enables us to monitor the student’s progress and identify if there are any problems with understanding or technique when we meet again at the next class.

It is essential that the student receives praise, encouragement and feedback for their efforts and that this happens as soon as possible after the work is finished.

With older students we encourage independent marking and monitoring. While it is still advisable for the parent to keep a keen eye, getting the student to mark and record their own work fosters independent learning which is a vital skill to have as the student progresses into higher primary classes and into secondary school.

My daughter has been attending the Tutor 11 plus programme for a while now. She has really enjoyed the lessons which are tailored specifically for the programme. Homework is set and my daughter works through it well.

We are extremely grateful to all the tutors for the help they gave to Marla in the run up to her entrance exam. She went into the exam with greater confidence and really felt like the tuition helped a lot. She has found the teaching style great.

My thanks go out to Tutors for the support and patience of the staff and teachers especially at this time. The technical help we have had has been amazing. Although just three times a week my child looks forward to her sessions.
